Joe was still confused but was eager to know how to finally keep the weight off. He wondered how it had nothing to do with will power. He had an anxious feeling about Yoga. He had never taken it before and wondered if he was going to look silly. Joe went to the yoga class and found out that it was a lot of fun. It was different than he thought it would be like. He expected all of these “experts” standing on their heads all contorted in some weird positions. He didn’t even know how he was going to participate. Joe was surprised to meet Frank again. Frank didn’t just lose weight. Frank was healthy. He wasn’t super huge with lumpy muscles but a was fit and lean. Joe had a good workout but he wasn’t dying or anything. He actually felt pretty refreshed and satisfied with himself.
After class Joe, Jake and Frank sat in a circle.
Frank: “So let’s talk and start your training Joe. Why do you want to lose weight anyway?”
Joe: “Because I’m fat.”
Frank: “That’s not good enough. You are going to have a better reason than that if we are going to make this work.”
Frank: “Joe, think about this. What is it that you don’t like about your present weight?”
Joe: “I don’t like the way I look. I don’t like the fact that I have to go to a big and tall store to find clothes that fit. I don’t like the way I get so tired so fast when I play with my kids.”
Frank: “What will happen if you stay at this weight?”
Joe: “If I stay at this weight. I won’t get to play with my kids as long as I would like to. The doctor told me that if I stayed at this weight that I would die prematurely of a heart attack or a stroke. I’ll miss watching my daughter get married and walking her down the aisle. I’ll spend the last years of my life as a burden to my family in and out of the hospital and leave my wife to grow old alone. I can’t let that happen. Joe said with tears in his eyes.”
Frank: “Joe… close your eyes. I want you to picture yourself when you finally lose the weight. How would your life be different?”
Joe followed Frank’s instructions. Joe closed his eyes. Joe saw himself on the beach. He wasn’t embarrassed to take his shirt off like he usually was. He’s playing volleyball and going waterskiing and having a much better time. Joe saw himself having a wonderful time with his family and he was able to keep up all day instead of just 30 mins or and hour. He also pictured himself watching his kids growing up. His oldest son Jason playing guitar. And his younger son Scott playing football. His daughter Olivia dancing ballet. He was there when they graduated high school and college. But most of all he was with his wife in their golden years spending time together just enjoying each other’s company.
Joe looked up with a smile on his face.
Frank: “Now Joe, I have an assignment for you. When you go home tonight, I want you to write down the biggest reasons why you want to lose weight. Make sure that these reasons actually motivate you. Write them down on a 3 3 x 5 cards and put them in places where you will see them a lot.”
Wow Joe thought. That was intense. He turned to Jake.
Joe: “Is this how it all started for you?”
Jake: “These are the exact same steps that go me where I am today.”
Frank: “Well guys I have to get going. Don’t forget to stick to your diet. I’ll see you tomorrow morning at 6:00 at the park and we’ll go for a walk.”
