Prospecting: How to look different than the rest
Let’s face it. The profession of network marketing has a negative stigma associated with it. When it comes to likeability, we rank along with telemarketers, lawyers, politicians and slick used car salesmen.
Regardless your background or current ability to talk to people you don’t know, you can absolutely master prospecting your network marketing business starting right now. No one else is teaching this method that can guarantee that you will never run out of prospects again.
We like to think that the negative stigma has everything to do with everyone else. “They” are ignorant. They don’t understand that their job is a pyramid and what we do is better. But really most of the reason why we have a negative stigma is because of us. Don’t get associated with the others. When you are prospecting, learn how to stand out and get recognized as a true professional.
That’s the secret formula to standing out in this profession. Most network marketers just aren’t nice.
“It’s more important to be kind than to be right.”
One example is the response to the pyramid scheme objection. It actually became really popular with the “I still think it is pyramid” cartoon.
That response may make you feel good when you say it to someone but it doesn’t make you look smart. It just makes you like a jerk.
For some reason network marketers don’t know when to stop. If someone doesn’t want to join, be okay with it. Not everyone will like the same movies as you or the same food as you so no amount of logical arguing will change their mind. Nagging is just plain annoying.
Listen to understand
This is a big one. I used to listen to a prospect so I could hear their objection in the hopes of being able to come up with a prefabricated response. But if you really want to stand out when you are prospecting, listen to understand. Step into your prospect’s world and respond to them.
5 Magic Words
Whether your prospect is complaining that they got burned in the past, or that they know someone that didn’t make money, or that they don’t want to sell or talk to their friends, let them express themselves. The best way that I’ve found to do that is to say this:
“Tell me more about that.”
Those 5 words change the whole temperature of the conversation. Your prospect might be hot and bothered because they are frustrated but the moment you step into their world, and say, “Tell me more about that.” You give them an outlet to release their stress and tell their side. They will be more cooperative in the conversation if you do that.

Instead of letting the prospect talk, often a network marketers will get into an argument with a prospect and if that happens, they will NEVER join you. It doesn’t matter if you are right, they don’t like you.
