Most of the time especially for new network marketers, their response pushes people away.
“I sell the best (face cream, weight loss shake, makeup) money can buy.”
“I do sales for the fast growing (make up, weight loss, anti aging) company on the planet.”
Saying something salesy like that really pushes people away. They know that you are gonna try and sell them something and no one wants to be sold.
The other alternative is when someone hasn’t thought about how to respond.
“Well I’m part of this company and umm, you build a team, and umm, we have this product (with such and such ingredient) it’s really good for you and umm Doctor So and So said he recommends it and we are gonna get rich.”
In the later example you don’t sound professional and in the early example you are trying to sound professional but you aren’t.
When they ask what do you do?
When someone asks, “What do you do?” these 9 words will raise their curiosity.
“I own my own business, what do you do?”
I learned that from Kim Klaver.
When you respond with “I own my own business, what do you do?”, chances are they won’t answer your question. They are going to dig further because you haven’t really answered their question.
“You own a business? Tell me more about that?”
Don’t ruin it
Hold back and control yourself.
Now that you have their attention, don’t ruin it by saying,
“I sell the best…”
Instead of trying to sell them, describe your ideal prospect or customer to them.
If you are prospecting for your opportunity, you can say something like this:
“I help people that want make a change in their life. I gotta warn you, this isn’t a pyramid or a get rich quick scheme. It’s for someone that is tired of their job and knows that they can’t or don’t want to do their job for the rest of their life. Do you know anyone?”
If you are prospecting for your product/service, you can say something like this:
“I sell a really high end coffee gourmet quality coffee. This isn’t for someone that gets their coffee at McDonalds or even Starbucks, it’s for someone that really enjoys a good cup of coffee. Do you know anyone?”
You could say the same things for skin cream, energy drinks, meal replacement shakes etc.
Don’t prospect them directly, instead ask them for a referral by saying, “do you know anyone?” If you don’t prospect them directly, they can’t reject you. If they are the ideal prospect for you or if they know someone, they will let you know.

Remember, either they are a good fit or they aren’t, either they know someone or they don’t. If it’s not a good fit or if they say they don’t know anyone, it’s not up you to convince them, it’s up to you find someone else that is a good fit.
