My productive days used to be very sporadic and hit or miss. The productivity of my day would usually be in direct correlation to how I felt. If I felt like working, then it was a productive day. If I felt lazy then it wasn’t a productive day. I used to wake up and stare at Facebook and YouTube for hours. I wouldn’t start my day until I had to get ready for an appointment or until I felt like doing something. I could not keep going on with my life like this, I couldn’t have my future depend on how I felt.
I’ve made a simple 5 minute change to my daily routine and it has made a huge difference in my life. Not only are my days more productive, they are more orderly and less chaotic.
All I do is this, every night, a I take 5 minutes and plan the following day. Here is how I do it.

First I look at my scheduled appointments so that I am aware of them. This could include coaching calls, speaking gigs, presentations, lunch with a friend or a business networking event. This is pretty quick and simple as I’m pretty good at making sure my schedule is kept online and easily accessible.
The next thing I do is I look at the tasks that I want to get accomplished. I might want to write a blog post or record a video. I might want to work on a digital product for my blog. All I do is simply put these tasks into an empty slot during my day.
I also take this time to schedule all of my daily routines and habits. I like to take a walk, meditate and do yoga everyday. I usually do them at the same time each day but sometimes these habits need to be moved around to accommodate my schedule. This is important because if an don’t take the time to schedule these everyday behaviors, they often get forgotten and don’t get done.
Once you skip one day it’s easy to skip the next day and soon instead of doing yoga everyday, it’s reduced to once a week or once a month. I don’t want that to happen.
Win Tomorrow Today
I used to do all of this planning every morning but I find that I can sleep better and I’m more productive if I take the time and do it the night before. That way, one of the first things I do each morning is look at my schedule and my plans. I used to wake up and play on my phone but now when I look at my phone, I realize that I don’t have time to play on my phone, I have a schedule to keep!
Go To Bed Satisfied
Ever since I’ve started to take the time and plan my day, I been going to bed feeling more productive and more satisfied. That’s because I make a list of everything I need to do and I cross them off the list as I accomplish them.
There is something satisfying to me about completing a task and then crossing it off the list.
When I go to bed at night I can look at my schedule or my list knowing that I worked hard and that I’m closer to my goals and dreams and feel satisfied that I did a job well done.
