When I first entered network marketing, this was one of the quotes that was presented to me. They said it in terms of the the reason why you should build a big team.
They would say, “If you want to go to the top, then you’ll have to bring a team with you. ”

I’ve grown up and I’ve matured since then and while the Zig Ziglar quote rings true. I understand it more clearly now.

I used to think it meant, if I want more time and money (through my network marketing opportunity), all I have to do is show others how to get more time and money too (by getting them to join my team).

I was wrong in my interpretation.

Let’s have a closer look at the Zig Ziglar quote:

“You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” ~Zig Ziglar

The real key is in the last 3 words. “What They Want”
It’s not:
“What I think they want.”
“What they need.”
“What they should want.”

It’s “What they want”

I used to think that I needed to present the problem that product or opportunity solved and then show my prospect that they have the problem and convince them that they needed what ever I was selling.

For example:
If I sold a juice from a superfruit that has lots of antioxidants and helps people with diabetes, heart disease and obesity, then I would try to convince my prospect they needed my product.

“Diabetes, heart disease and obesity are the number 1 killers. You don’t want to die do you? You need more antioxidants. You need to get this juice from this superfruit!”

The issue with this technique is that while it solves a problem, it doesn’t necessarily solve a problem that my propect wants solved.

If you really want to serve others, then solve a problem that they want solved. Don’t give them (or make them aware of) a problem and solve it for them.

How to serve
The best way to serve someone is to ask them.
Ask them what their problems are and if you can, help them with their problems.
If someone says they don’t like their wrinkles, don’t try to turn it around and convince them that need to drink your superfruit juice. Maybe you know someone in the network marketing profession that has some awesome anti-aging cream. You could help your prospect by referring them to your colleague.
If you did that, you’ll be serving 2 people. The first one is your prospect (who gets their wrinkle problem solved), the second one is your colleague (who gets customer).

You might wonder, “How do I benefit from that?”

I could give you the fluffy answer and say, “You’ll benefit from it because it’s a good deed and you’ll feel better about yourself. ” But the crux of the matter is this, if you really beleive in the quote,

“You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” ~Zig Ziglar

Then the Universe will deliver to you. 10 times or 100 times.
Your colleague might thank you and refer you some customers.
Your prospect might come back and connect you with your next leader in the business.
Or it might not come from either one of those people. The Universe may just deliver to you in an unexpected way. They key is to serve.

Find out what people want and if you can, help them. If you do that enough, you’ll have everything you want in life.
