There Might Actually Be A Good Thing About Your Bad Habits

Bad Habits
Bad habits are one of the obstacles on your path to success. Bad habits help you procrastinate and they distract you from doing work that can help you make progress. When I talk about bad habits, I’m talking about the unproductive habits. Like those hobbies that help you procrastinate and keep you away from your dream work. I’m not referring to the habits that harm you like smoking or that harm others.

Unproductive Habits
What makes a habit unproductive? I’m sure that you’ve heard of children that spend too much time on their tablet. Instead of playing outside and getting some exercise, they are spending their time being couch potatoes staring at the tablet all day. It effects their health and it also affects how they socialize with others.
What about bookworms? There are kids that do nothing but read all day. Instead of playing outside and getting some exercise, they are spending their time with their nose in book. It effects their health and it also affects they way they socialize with others. Some how reading doesn’t seem like a bad habit but playing on a tablet is.

The Good In The Bad
The good things about “bad” habits (remember, when I say bad habits, I mean unproductive habits) is that at least you find passion in something. You have found something that you love to do. Instead of thinking of your habit as bad or unproductive, treat it like a compass and try on the possibility that your habit is pointing you in the direction of your purpose in life. How do you do that?

Two of the things that are important to defining your purpose in life are:
1. You have to love it and find passion in it. (you got that one covered already)
2. Your purpose must serve others and bring value to the world.

Control Your Habit

Habits are like energy. If energy is controlled, it can keep a home warm and it can cook a meal however if energy is uncontrolled it can burn a house down.

It’s the same with a habit, if you can learn how to control it and harness it, then you can use it to serve you and to serve others. If left uncontrolled, it could ruin your life and it can ruin other lives too.

Some people may think that their “bad” habit can’t possibly bring value to the world or that it can’t be monetized but you’d be surprised.

What if your habit is playing video games? Most people would label video games as a bad habit however, there are many people that bring value to the world with their passion of video games. Some examples include:

-creating video game walk-throughs and tutorials
-streaming their games.
-starting a video game podcast.
-creating and selling video games.

There are many people that not only bringing great value to the world with their passion of video games but they are also earning a living while doing so.

How cool is it that they get to do what they love for a living?

So how can you bring value to the world with your bad habit? How can you make your unproductive habit, productive?

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” ~ Aristotle
